Pass Mimi’s Law: Real Consequences for Drivers Who Hit and Leave Animals
The Issue
My name is Briana and I lost my dog/baby/bestfriend Mimi on June 28th, 2024 when she was hit by a driver who never even stopped. A year later—on nearly the same day—I watched another innocent animal die the same way. And once again, no one took responsibility. Someone looked at my pup and instead of moving out of the way decided that it should be her last breath the same for a lot of animals EVERYWHERE. I’m calling all animal lovers. The amount of petitions I see on here for animals getting hit by cars is unacceptable.
I’m heartbroken, but I’m also furious. This happens too often, and the consequences are far too weak. A small fine or warning is not enough. I lost my best friend while someone went on with their life and did not think twice about it.
I am calling for Mimi’s Law, a new policy to give real consequences to drivers who hit animals and leave the scene. Too many people treat animal lives like they don’t matter. It’s time the law said otherwise. IN EVERY STATE.
🚨 Mimi’s Law Would:
• Impose an automatic $5,000 fine for hitting and fleeing from any animal (if driver was able to drive safely without hitting the animal)
• Require 1 year minimum jail time for offenders
• Increase jail time if intent or negligence is proven (like swerving toward the animal)
• Surveillance Footage Check Mandate
All city surveillance and nearby business cameras must be checked within 72 hours after a reported animal hit-and-run
Police or animal control must open an investigation when a body is reported
• Suspend the driver’s license for 1 year minimum, and permanently on a second offense
• Require court appearances so offenders face public accountability
This isn’t about punishment. It’s about prevention. Right now, most drivers kill animals and leave the scene. Many cases aren’t even investigated. This is a systemic failure, and we can fix it. If people are afraid of what will happen when they kill and run, they’ll think twice. They’ll drive differently. They’ll see animals as lives, not roadblocks.
Mimi’s Law gives names, dignity, and consequences to the countless voiceless animals killed on our roads every day. Animals (pets, strays,) have no clue of the danger they face when their paws/feet touch street pavement although humans in cars know the damage they can cause.
Please sign and share. Let’s change the law—for Mimi, and for every life that deserved better. Let’s turn grief into justice.
One step at a time, one state at a time starting with just a signature.
