Why this petition matters

Started by Scott S

The recent tragedy in Highland Park as well as many others have been committed with semi-automatic rifles with high capacity magazines designed more for war than sporting purposes.  These kinds of weapons allow perpetrators to inflict an extreme amount of carnage in very little time.

HB5522 is a bill proposed in Illinois that would ban the possession and sale of assault weapons in illinois making it harder for those who would wish to do harm to others to get their hands on these kind of weapons.  We ask our politicians to enact this legislation and for governor JB Pritzker to sign it in to law.

My wife, a local teacher in Highland Park, my 2 children, and myself went to the Highland Park parade expecting to create more family memories. We saw classmates of my daughter ride down the street in the children's bike parade as well as students my wife taught followed by the highschool marching band. Suddenly there were gunshots that went on and on without stopping. I grabbed my daughter and my wife grabbed my son. My daughter was screaming hysterically "what's happening! Why is this happening!" as I cajoled her to keep running. We barely understood what was happening. I thought there had to be multiple shooters, the gunshots just kept going and going and there were already so many police there. Are her friends ok? Was all the other family we had there ok? We still don't know how this will affect our children and we may never feel comfortable going to another parade again. We only later learned that a young man with a semi automatic rifle was perched on top of a building and fired off more than 80 rounds in to the crowd.  Despite the huge police presence already there, no one could do anything to stop him.  This isn't freedom.  No one should be afraid to take their kids to a parade.
