PASS D.J.'S LAW
The Issue
My life was changed forever in March of 2024 when I lost my 16-year-old son, D.J. Dorathy, in a tragic accident that could have been prevented. This devastating incident involved a driver with a graduated license, and it has sparked my mission to ensure that no parent endures the same heartache due to preventable mistakes.
Illinois enacted a graduated driver’s licensing (GDL) program to minimize the risks associated with inexperienced drivers. However, there are gaps in the enforcement of consequences when these drivers are involved in severe accidents. It is imperative that we amend the law to enforce stricter repercussions. The proposed law, which passed the Illinois House with an overwhelming 113-0 vote, aims to automatically suspend the license of a graduated driver for six months if they cause an accident that results in serious injury or death.
Unfortunately, this vital legislation has stalled in the Illinois Senate, leaving a crucial gap in our road safety regulations unaddressed. We need your support to advocate for this life-saving measure and ensure it passes through the Senate without further delay.
Other states have seen similar measures reduce accidents significantly, protecting countless lives and preventing unnecessary tragedies, just like the one that claimed my son. We must prioritize the safety of our roads and hold those responsible accountable, creating a legal deterrent for careless driving.
Join me in urging the Illinois Senate to pass this legislation swiftly ( D.J.'s Law SB2076). Let's push for a law that enforces accountability and saves lives. I cannot bring D.J. back, but together, we can make a difference for future generations and those we hold dear.
Your support can drive change and help prevent another family from facing the immeasurable pain we have suffered. Please sign this petition to urge the Illinois Senate to prioritize this legislation and protect our community's safety.
