Pass Abdul's Law: Protect NYC Deli Workers

The Issue

Deli and bodega workers across New York City face real risks – especially during the late-night and early morning hours when many work alone.

For nearly a year, Abdul, a deli worker, experienced ongoing threats from a customer. He expressed fear for his safety as violence against deli and bodega workers increased. Despite these warning signs, there was no required safety system in place to protect him.

On April 25th Abdul was killed while working a late-night shift at his family-owned deli.

We are calling on the New York City Council to pass Abdul’s Law: The Deli and Bodega Workers Safety Act, which would:

·      Require panic buttons in both delis and bodegas

·      Require security cameras covering the entrance and cashier areas

·      Require annual worker safety trainings

·      Provide City funding and Tax incentives so that small businesses are not burdened.

The warning signs were there—but the protections were not.

No worker should have to choose between their safety and their job.

Deli and bodega workers are more than just the people behind the counter making our coffees and sandwiches —They are essential workers of our communities. Many are seen as extended family.

Abdul spoke up. Now we must act.

We are asking for your help to urge the New York City Council to protect deli and bodega workers across NYC by implementing safer working conditions and helping to prevent the next tragedy.
