Cycle Law Scotland
27 Jan 2016
Despite a lack of recent updates , there has been a lot going on.
Following our presentation to the Scottish Parliament's Cross Party Group for Cycling (CPGC) in Oct 15 (http://www.slideshare.net/rodmitchell2/cpgc-presentation-october-2015), we have focused on broadening our support base and continue to communicate and educate.
We have quite a few new supporters including the following:-
• BRAKE
• London Cycling Campaign – voted at their AGM in Dec 15 to support PL.
• Road Danger Reduction Forum
• Stop Killing Cyclists
• Dublin Cycling Campaign
• Irish Cycling Advocacy Group
• Anthony Collins Solicitors
• FEVR - European Federation of Road Traffic Victims
Other developments include:-
• Cycling Scotland Conference (Nov 15) – discussion of PL by MSPs across all Parties.
• Isle Of Man Government – Phil Gawne, Minister of Infrastructure confirmed last week that "The IOM Government would be putting forward a Bill this year that would allow the introduction of various road safety measures through regulation including Presumed Liability."
• Insurance Company discussions with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) are ongoing and we have support from Insurance Brokers Yellow Jersey and Kwik Fit Insurance Services
• A motion to support the introduction of Presumed Liability is being proposed at the STUC Annual Congress on 20th April.
• Chris Boardman and UK Transport Minister, Robert Goodwill, made a trip to Copenhagen. Lesson No 1 learned and required in the UK = Legislation to improve safety and mutual respect.
• A recent BBC Documentary showed former Director of Public Prosecutions, Sir Keir Starmer QC, suggesting that there perhaps needed to be a change to the process in Civil Law and that there should be a move towards presumed liability.
• We are supporting the Scottish “We Walk, We Cycle We Vote” campaign (http://www.walkcyclevote.scot) under Safety: Promoting and delivering safer roads for both walking and cycling.
And finally,
• Brenda Mitchell was a finalist at the UK Cycling Media Awards in the Cycling Advocacy Category – along with Boris Johnson, Malcolm Shepherd (Sustrans), Roger Geffen (CTC) + others. Chris Boardman was the eventual winner.
• Kim Harding had an great article published in the Holyrood Magazine (https://www.holyrood.com/articles/comment/soapbox-pedestrians-and-cyclists-lack-protection-kim-harding)
• Online Campaign Signatories – 9454
We really would benefit from having more online signatories. If you could share the link with friends and family, that would help greatly. It can be found on the homepage of our website http://www.roadshare.co.uk
