New Deforestation Laws Australia (school project)
The issue
In 1937, 66% of the world's remaining wilderness was flourishing. Now in 2020, there is only 35% left undamaged. This is almost half of what remained 100 years ago. One of the main reasons this happened was due to deforestation. Many fauna and flora species have been dropping in the population at an alarming rate. This could lead to more endangered species and mass extinction. “We can’t cut down trees at this rate forever, and anything we can’t do forever is the definition of unsustainable” David Attenborough -A life on our planet.
Another severe consequence of deforestation is that without trees, the carbon dioxide that gets released into our world from fires or volcanic eruptions, will not be disposed of properly. If it is not disposed of properly, the ozone layer will start to decay, global warming will start to increase speed and the world will eventually become uninhabitable. If we do start to stop deforestation and start to regrow our forests global warming will be slowed or prevented altogether. We will also need to keep forest diversity which is keeping trees different in forests so that animals have lots of variety in where they can live and also so the different tress can serve their purpose in the environment.
We would like to implement a law that states “for every tree cut down another tree of the same species will be planted in the same place. You may also use tree farms that are either enclosed or in an area that has no living species and would be hard for them to get to.”
