Parents in Europe can lose all access to their children overnight

Parents in Europe can lose all access to their children overnight
The Issue
Every year, thousands of children are taken across international borders, leaving one parent suddenly cut off and thrust into a terrifying, complex legal struggle. These situations are not always driven by malice; often they stem from fear, conflict, or desperation. But regardless of the motivation, one truth remains universal: children deserve access to both parents, and no mother or father should have to endure the agony of being separated from their child with no clear path to reunification.
International parental child abduction is not only a deeply emotional crisis, it is a legal maze that many families are simply not equipped to navigate. While the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction provides a framework for cooperation and return between member countries, its reach is limited. Several nations, including Pakistan, are not signatories, leaving left-behind parents with almost no formal mechanisms to enforce their rights or even secure basic contact with their children.
This gap creates a devastating reality: parents within Europe can lose all access to their children overnight if they are taken to a non-Hague country, and current systems offer little support or protection in these cases.
European institutions, including the European Parliament, the European Commission, and national bodies such as the German Bundestag hold the ability to shape policy far beyond Europe’s borders. Europe must lead by example and actively advocate for stronger global cooperation, more effective dispute resolution mechanisms, and diplomatic frameworks that protect families regardless of jurisdiction.
We need laws and protocols that:
Prioritize the child’s right to maintain meaningful relationships with both parents
Close legal loopholes that allow cross-border abductions to occur or remain unresolved
Establish clear, standardized response procedures when a child is taken abroad
Promote collaboration with non-Hague countries to create return pathways, mediation programs, and contact guarantees
Provide left-behind parents with legal, financial, and psychological support
Ensure that parental rights are respected without escalating conflict between parents or countries
Every parent regardless of nationality, gender, or background deserves the reassurance that international borders cannot be used as barriers against being part of their child’s life.
Imagine waking up one day to find that your child has been taken abroad, unable to reach them, cut off without explanation, and left with no immediate remedy. This is the emotional reality for countless parents. It is a silent crisis that requires urgent, meaningful action.
This petition calls on the European Parliament and the German Bundestag to take decisive steps to protect children and families from international abduction. Europe must strengthen existing frameworks, build new diplomatic pathways, and ensure that no parent is left helpless simply because the country involved is outside the Hague Convention.
Our children deserve stability, protection, and access to both of their parents.
Our laws and institutions must reflect that.
Please join me in demanding action.
Sign this petition to help ensure that no parent in Europe or beyond is forced to face the heartbreak of international child abduction without support, protection, and hope for justice.
