The Canberra Times recently (13 June) reported "ACT Christian schools are concerned they may not be exempt from proposed new discrimination laws, which would restrict the ability of religious bodies to employ people based on their faith".

The draft Discrimination Amendment Bill, which seeks to update the ACT 1991 Discrimination ACT has been released for public comment. Submissions are welcome until 1 July 22.

"Changes include the way religious bodies can lawfully discriminate, requiring there to be a link between the doctrines of faith and the way in which the body seeks to discriminate against someone" the Canberra Times reports.

The proposed changes can be viewed in detail at: https://yoursayconversations.act.gov.au/download_file/view/6268/2149#:~:text=The%20Draft%20Bill%20introduces%20a,on%20commencement%20of%20the%20reforms

HRLA is speaking this evening (Tuesday, 21 June) about the implications and and issues surrounding the proposed Bill. If you are free come along and have your say. Details for the meeting are in the link or can be found at www.acl.org.au
