The Atlanta Board of Education tells us they are committed to two-way communication with the public about the organization and operation of the Atlanta Public Schools. This commitment includes keeping the public regularly informed and providing opportunities for the public to interact with the Board and the APS.

The board met behind closed doors with NO public input and decided not to offer a contract extension to Dr. Meria Carstarphen. The board tells us Dr. Carstarphen’s performance is not in question.

When Dr. Carstarphen was hired as the superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools in 2014, the district was reeling from the largest cheating scandal in the history of public education. At that time, Dr. Carsarphen stood in front of the Atlanta community and said, "It's time to bring pride back to the school system.” Over these past 5 years, Dr. Carstarphen has done just that.

Under Dr. Carstarphen’s leadership, Atlanta Public Schools has made great progress. Graduation rates have risen from 59.1% in 2014 to 77.9% in 2019, during her tenure.

Education is the foundation of democracy and is the cornerstone that will help children and families rise out of intergenerational poverty. Dr. Carstarphen believes in Atlanta; she loves this city. She believes in her team and knows they have done great work together. Dr. Carstarphen loves the kids of Atlanta Public Schools, considers the kids part of her family, and mentors many of them now. Her work in Atlanta Public Schools is not done!

Dr. Carstarphen speaks up for those who feel as though they do not have a voice. At times, a superintendent, especially in a large urban school district, has to be the voice for those who feel they are voiceless. Have parts of the last 5 years been hard? Absolutely... but what this superintendent is doing is transformation - it’s generational - she is bringing difference voices in this city together.

Dr. Carstarphen absolutely loves her job and wants to continue the work to ensure that Atlanta has a homegrown educated workforce that makes this city proud. All of our children need you, the Board of Education, this superintendent, and the community to fight for them and to be their voice and strongest advocates, so they have the best chance to lead choice-filled lives.

Dr. Carstarphen did not create the disparity in education outcomes. She is, and has been, looking for solutions her entire life. It’s a drive and passion she has said her dad instilled in her back in her hometown of Selma, Alabama. As individuals and as a society, we have to keep pushing ourselves and believing in this transformational process and the leadership of OUR Superintendent, Dr. Meria Carstarphen.
