The Issue
To Whom It May Concern,
has long advocated for a safe and welcoming environment; at times, student interference is necessary to ensure the protocol is maintained. Over the quarantine, footage of , an incoming senior, was shared among a number of those with access to social media. In the video, the student shouted a racial slur across the classroom correlating to the letter “n” on a candy wrapper.
As reported by witnesses, did not immediately face formal discipline, nor is it known that he later dealt with any form of accountability. has taken the position of the 2021-2022 ASB President. Principal Garcia was informed of this issue but did not take initiative to remove him from the position.
Along with social media posts containing Confederate flags and weaponry (which in this context may be a concern to some), this information is necessary to disclose. A concerned parent also shared has harassed their disabled child, uses racial slurs and targets children of color. This oppressive and predatory behavior is a direct infringement of what has pledged to stand for. Those on campus should feel their ASB President is fit to be a good representative, influencer, and decision-maker.
According to the , violated section 18 protected under CA Education Code 48908.
- Caused, attempted to cause, threatened to cause, or participated in any act of hate violence (expression of hostility due to race, gender, religion, disability, nationality, sexual orientation): Racial slurs over time, e-mail, insults, taunts, posting or distributing posters or leaflets, jokes, physical assault, vandalism, telephone calls, cross burning, destroying religious symbols.
Although none of the guidelines’ recommended consequences were implemented, it is now up to the PGHS staff whether shall still have the ability to fulfill his role as ASB President. If anybody else feels an alternative individual is necessary to take his position, please add your full name and an optional message. With enough signatures, this petition will be carried out to the Student Election Board.
