Pace University Work With Chartwells to Improve Dining Hall

The Issue

Pace University students are struggling to eat consistent daily meals due to poor management of Chartwells Higher Education employees. There is limited food selection, restrictive dining hours, limited to no access to food on certain non-federal holidays, and rising already high prices for lower-quality food. Reports of food poisoning or digestive upset are more common than not,

Workers suffer from high-stress environments, due to poor management and understaffing. Limited stations open leading to higher workloads to those that are open. Improvement to these working conditions will also benefit the staff that work there.

Options on the weekends are limited to a burger and fries, chicken tenders, a deli sandwich, Starbucks, or a poor salad (which at one point was infested with crickets). Fresh produce, when available, is limited to apples, overripe bananas, or flavorless pineapple.

Students are frustrated, as we are required to have a dining plan (Minimum $500) on top of our rising tuition and dorm fees, with no visible improvement on Pace or Chartwells' part. We are not upset with the workers themself, as they suffer from this as well, rather we are upset with Pace University continuously choosing Chartwells Higher Education Dining Services despite their consistently bad ratings from multiple universities and consistent complaints from Pace students.

This is not the first time we've had issues with Chartwells. In 2023 there was an agreement to lower prices, and only 2 years later prices have risen back to existing if not higher prices than before, along with fewer options for food. Chartwells (via the Pace Eats Instagram) constantly disable comments and DM's on their account, while ironically encouraging questions and concerns to be asked through there.

A short-term solution could be more food options, more staffing, and/or lower prices. An ideal solution would be Pace entering an agreement with a new food service company, although we realize this may take longer, or working with Chartwells to communicate with students to actually recognize our complaints.

Some quotes from Pace Students about the dining hall include: "The dining hall just scares me", "i love trying to find something to eat at the dining hall on the weekend", "Nice to see that the dining hall has just given up", "Seriously cannot put into words how excited i am to not have to deal with the dining hall for a WHOLE MONTH"
