Change the spelling of the past tense of "read" to "red"

The Issue

As a mix of Germanic and Latin tongues, English is convoluted enough with its many exceptions and antiquated spellings. But there is one word that has an insufferable problem with its orthography: the word read. When you saw that word in your head, did you pronounce it as "reed" or "red"? For verbs, tense is extremely important. If you can't tell what a verb's tense is by sight and have to know its context, problems can easily occur when reading something aloud. The word lead could refer to a verb or a heavy metal, but at least it's pronounced differently in each case. In the sense of leadership, the past tense of lead is spelled "led," but many people incorrectly spell it as "lead" purely because of read's inconsistency.

We can't fix all of English's problems, but we could at least make one word easier to read aloud without having to comb the sentence it's in for context. It would take minimal effort, it would prevent confusion amongst itself and other similarly spelled words, and its relief on orators in all types of situations would be worth it. Now that you've red this explanation, can't you see what a relief it would be to know exactly what tense you red the word in?
