I am a resident of Cherrybank, one of the neighbourhoods that would greatly benefit from the new Aldi supermarket. This is not just about convenience; it's about accessibility for our elderly residents who currently have to rely on public transport or taxis to reach the city centre for their grocery needs. The proposed Aldi site had previously been granted planning permission but was unfortunately blocked by Tesco.

This decision has disrupted plans for a supermarket within walking distance for residents of Cherrybank, Oakbank and Craigie. It is not just an issue affecting us locally; it also raises questions about fair competition and consumer choice in our wider community.

According to data from Age UK, 23% of people aged 65 and over find it difficult to access local shops and services due to lack of local facilities (Age UK Report, 2019). The new Aldi store could significantly reduce this percentage in our area.

We believe that overturning this decision would be a step towards supporting fair competition between supermarkets while also improving accessibility for our elderly population.
