Overturn Citizens United to Reform Campaign Finance

Overturn Citizens United to Reform Campaign Finance
The Issue
Our system is broken and one crucial step in fixing it begins with campaign finance reform. The 2010 Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission unleashed a wave of special interest money in U.S. elections, flooding our political processes with corporate cash and overshadowing the voices of individual citizens. This decision fundamentally altered the landscape of political campaigning and has made it increasingly difficult for everyday people to have their voices heard amidst the cacophony of billionaires and mega-corporations.
Political spending by corporations should not drown out the democratic process. Before Citizens United, there were limits to how much corporations and unions could donate to political campaigns. Since this ruling, those limits have been drastically removed, allowing the ultra-wealthy to have undue influence on elections and policy-making. This systemic problem has led to a government that often seems more concerned with the needs of big donors than with the needs of ordinary voters. According to studies, post-Citizens United, over $1 billion dollars were spent by outside groups in each of the last three presidential election years, an unprecedented surge of political spending that dwarfed previous campaign cycles (Brennan Center for Justice).
To repair our democracy, it is imperative to overturn Citizens United through a constitutional amendment. This change would restore limits on political spending, ensuring that elections are truly in the hands of the people—not just a few wealthy entities. This is not a partisan issue but a fundamental question of fairness in our democratic society.
Join me in demanding that our leaders prioritize real campaign finance reform and take the necessary steps to put power back into the hands of the people. Sign this petition to support the overturning of Citizens United and make a stand for a fairer, more equitable political system for all. Every signature counts as we strive to build a healthier democratic process.
