The fear coming from ignorance and difference is spreading with the pandemic.

According to Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council(A3PCON), 2,680 hate crimes occurred in 46 states of the United States in the last 12 months.

The number of Chinese-American victims reached 40.8%, followed by Korean-American(15.4%), Vietnamese-American(7.9%), Filipino-American(7.3%), Japanese-American(6.6%).

70.9% of hate crimes were verbal abuse, 10% were discrimination and denial of service in workplaces, physical attacks 9%, and 6.4% of cases were counted as intentionally coughing or spitting toward Asians.

Recently, physical attacks are happening more boldly and bluntly.

At the end of last month, in San Francisco, an 84-year-old Thai-American man was attacked when he was walking, hit his head on the floor, and died. Also in Oakland, a 91-year-old Asian-American man was targeted for hate crime and was severely injured.

 

The pandemic intensified human anxiety and suspicion, and this often paralyzes logical reasoning. This is the reality we are facing.

But it is our choice how to respond to the reality.

Hatred on minority is a wimpish and easy choice.

Hate crime perpetrators know that minorities didn't do any wrong, but they are making the wimpish choice that easily relieves anxiety and gains a sense of belonging to majority.

We can make a more elegant choice. We should introspect on anxiety and band together.

We must reveal the reality of the false ideology that justifies hate and prejudice. Even if it is said that China is the epicenter of the pandemic, would any reason be there that Asian-Americans who have never been to China were to be the target of hate crime?

If we remain silent, false ideology will be justified and socially accepted.

We should not use others as a means of relieving sentiment without overcoming anxiety, but should overcome the fear that comes from ignorance and hold others' hands and make change together.

Change does not start on a large scale. It starts with everyday practices.

• - Thinking about the stereotypes I already have.
• - Making complaints on the stereotypes that mass media produce.
• - Sympathize with the victims of racism.

are what we have to do.

We should tell others that hatred toward others in this pandemic era is only a coward choice.

We must overcome the ignorance and discrimination, and start change with Asians!

무지와 다름에서 오는 두려움이 전염병과 함께 퍼지고 있습니다.

미국의 아시아 인권단체 연합기구인 ‘아시아 퍼시픽 정책기획위원회(A3PCON)’에 최근 1년 간 접수된 사건 자료에 의하면 증오 범죄는 전체 50개 주 중에서 46개 주에서 발생했고, 모두 2천680건에 달했습니다.

중국계 피해자가 40.8%로 가장 많았고, 한국계(15.4%), 베트남계(7.9%), 필리핀계(7.3%), 일본계(6.6%) 순이었습니다.

유형별로는 증오 범죄의 70.9%가 언어폭력이었고, 직장 내 차별과 서비스 거부 사례는 10%를 차지했고, 물리적 공격을 가한 경우도 9%, 의도적으로 아시아계를 향해 기침하거나 침을 뱉는 사례도 6.4%로 집계됐습니다.

최근 들어 물리적 폭력이 더 대범하고 노골적으로 발생하고 있습니다.

지난달 말 샌프란시스코에서는 84세 태국계 남성이 산책길에 공격을 받아 바닥에 머리를 부딪친 뒤 숨졌고, 오클랜드(캘리포니아)에서도 91세 아시아계 남성이 증오범죄 표적이 돼 크게 다쳤습니다.

 

전염병으로 인해 인간의 불안과 의심은 강화되고, 강화된 불안과 의심은 이성을 종종 마비시킵니다. 우리 모두가 마주한 현실입니다.

하지만 이 현실에 어떻게 반응할 지는 우리의 선택입니다.

소수자에 대한 혐오는 우리가 선택할 수 있는 나약하고 쉬운 선택지입니다.

증오범죄 가해자들은 소수자들이 실은 잘못이 없는 것을 알고 있지만, 간편하게 불안을 해소하고 다수로서의 소속감을 얻는 나약한 선택을 하고 있습니다.

우리는 더 품격 있는 선택을 할 수 있습니다. 불안에 대해 성찰하고, 연대해야합니다.

우리는 혐오와 편견을 정당화하는 거짓 이데올로기의 실체를 알려나가야 합니다. 중국이 전염병의 발원지라 하더라도, 중국에 가본 적 없는 아시아계 미국인들이 혐오범죄의 대상이 될 이유가 있을까요?

우리가 침묵하면 거짓 이데올로기는 정당화되고, 사회적으로 용인될 것입니다.

우리는 불안을 이기지 못한 채 타인을 감정 해소 수단으로 대할 것이 아니라, 무지에서 오는 두려움을 버티고 넘어서서 타인의 손을 잡고 세상의 변화를 만들어나가야 합니다.

변화는 거창하게 시작하지 않습니다. 일상적인 실천에서 시작합니다.

• - 미디어가 생산하는 고정관념에 항의하는 것
• - 인종차별 피해자의 경험에 귀 기울이는 것
