Send the SMT girls basketball team to OFSAA

The Issue

If you are reading this then that means you probably clicked on some link sent to your email, or some link found in your friends Instagram bio. But since you’re here, let’s talk.

Following an incredible, undefeated season, the St. Mother Teresa Titans girls basketball team have been denied their opportunity to compete provincially at OFSAA.

After a very unfortunate year and a half away from their sport, the Titans have worked hard and churned out insane amounts of athleticism to go 7-0 this season, including a City Championship victory against Glebe Collegiate Institute. Although an exciting win, they could not help but feel a wave of disappointment as it was reminded they would not be able to compete in OFSAA this year in St. Catherine’s.

Of course they all understand the implications and effects a worldwide pandemic has had and the risks that come with reopening the world once again. However, with the proper precautions, the belief is the SMT Titans can play safely against teams from across Ontario.

It should also be recognized that club sports are up and running. Teams from Ottawa are travelling to Toronto and Montreal for tournaments. Masks are not required, fans are welcomed.

They ask you to keep in mind the grade 9’s and 10’s. This is their first year playing competitively at SMT, to take away the full experience from them would be unjust.

They ask you to keep in mind the grade 11’s. Those girls have trained so hard over the last few years and are some of the biggest contributors to the team’s successes.

They ask you, once more, to keep in mind the grade 12’s, three girls who have been working hard for this opportunity for three years. Their coaches and teammates have watched them blossom as players as well as people. They can not be robbed of their final chance.

They urge you to sign this petition. Signing would show your love and support for sports at SMT, provide hope for a bright future in basketball and send the national capital representatives to OFSAA.

The team thanks you immensely for your time and we hope you consider signing our petition.

Sincerely,

Titans basketball
