As Australian National Paralympic Football Team Head Coach I would like to thank everybody, or almost everybody, for their kind support in this battle against the Australian Sports Commission. There are a minority of you that have voiced their opinions, negatively, this is okay, because as Australians we have the right of free speech, which is one of the wonderful things about our country. I would ask that supporters of the Pararoos please refrain from ridiculing or getting angry at these individuals. Often, as citizens of this great country, we find it difficult to see another's point of view, often because of lack of knowledge, bias and understanding. This is why it is important to educate, for people to learn, and for some individuals to have some empathy. Please, let us do this in a positive and productive way. Myself and my staff and players have worked extremely hard over the last 6 years fighting stigma, bias and inequality and we will continue to battle, but please let that battle be done in a positive way, so that we do not denigrate the progress that we have made so far. Keep comments and attitudes positive and maybe, just maybe those individuals that do not have empathy, will start to see the situation that we struggle with in a new light. it reminds me of a situation many years ago, I had just retired from coaching able bodied state teams and had one of the first coaching sessions, with my new team, at the Sydney Academy of Sport. At the time, we didn't have the name the Pararoos and the FFA had just taken over the program. While my new squad was warming up with my Assistant Coach, Kai Lammert, a young, obnoxious young 12 year old walked up to me and said " 'ere' you're all spastics arn't you, there's something wrong with you all, youre all disabled, what ya playing football for? I looked at him and said "yes we are disabled, but isn't everybody, in some fashion? As he ran off, I pondered, who really had the disability, the little boy, or some of my players that were training for their next International in Malaysia.
