Our Dogs Are Suffering – Brevard County Shelter Must Expand NOW

Our Dogs Are Suffering – Brevard County Shelter Must Expand NOW
The Issue
Right now, behind the locked doors of our county’s taxpayer-funded animal shelter, over 150 dogs are crammed into a space built for just 80.
Dogs are stacked in crates. They pace in tiny kennels. They sleep on cold concrete. They cry out, waiting for someone to notice them before time runs out.
This isn’t a shelter anymore — it’s a crisis. And it’s happening under the watch of Sheriff Wayne Ivey, whose office controls the shelter.
These animals did nothing wrong. They were abandoned, lost, or neglected — and now they’re paying the price for a system that refuses to make room for them. Overcrowding means illness spreads faster, stress levels skyrocket, and dogs are more likely to be euthanized simply because there’s nowhere to put them.
And as if that’s not enough — many areas of the shelter are not fully enclosed and lack air conditioning, leaving animals to endure Florida’s brutal heat and humidity day after day. This is not humane care.
While we demand long-term change, immediate action must be taken to reduce suffering right now. This includes providing adequate shade for the backside of the facility in the kennel areas to protect dogs from direct sun and extreme heat until permanent solutions are in place.
We, the undersigned, demand that Sheriff Ivey:
1. Expand the shelter immediately to safely house every animal in need.
2. Fully enclose the facility and install air conditioning throughout to protect animals from extreme heat.
3. Provide adequate shade and heat protection immediately for all outdoor kennel areas.
4. Increase staff and resources so dogs get proper care, enrichment, and medical attention.
5. Plan for the future so we never face this preventable crisis again.
Every day we delay, dogs suffer — and some will not make it out alive. This is our county. These are our animals. We will not stay silent while they suffer and die waiting for help.
