City staff do not want Ottawa to pursue the Bee City Canada designation. The Environment Protection Committee will vote on staff recommendations at a meeting tomorrow, April 16 at 9:30.
The staff report indicates that participation in the Bee City program would not add substantive value to the work already being done. It says the program creates new administrative requirements without commensurate benefits and it could divert resources to reporting rather than results.
The application does have four sections:
1. current actions to protect pollinators
2. plans for creating healthy pollinator habitat
3. plans for educating the public about pollinators
4. how the city will celebrate pollinators.
The annual re-application process is similar. City of Oshawa example.
