Spring Mill has always been at the heart of our community – a place where families, young people, sports teams, walkers, and nature lovers come together. For generations, it has created lasting memories and provided opportunities for people of all ages to connect, stay active, and enjoy the outdoors.

 

For Ossett Town Juniors, Spring Mill is more than just a playing field – it is our home. Over the years, hundreds of volunteers have given their time to coach teams, run the line, open tuck shops, organise fundraising events, and support the development of local children. We have seen first-hand the positive impact that accessible sports and green spaces can have on physical health, mental wellbeing, and community spirit. This is about much more than football.

 

While we all love playing on grass pitches, increasingly unpredictable weather means matches and training sessions are often cancelled, making it harder to keep children active and engaged. Across the area, there is a growing demand for reliable all-weather facilities, and we know this challenge affects many sports and community groups, not just football.

 

That is why we are proposing the development of two new 3G all-weather pitches. These facilities would provide year-round opportunities for people to stay active, whatever the weather, while supporting the development of future athletes from Ossett and beyond. Modern all-weather pitches can accommodate a variety of sports, including football, rugby, and hockey, helping more people enjoy the benefits of regular participation.

 

Alongside the pitches, we hope to create a welcoming community hub where local groups can meet, learn, and connect. The space could host everything from health and fitness classes to skills workshops, support groups, community events, and organisations such as Men’s Sheds and Lift Up groups. A facility like this would help strengthen community ties, support mental wellbeing, and provide a place where everyone feels welcome and included.

 

Our vision also includes enhancing the surrounding outdoor environment. We would like to develop nature trails and learning spaces that encourage people to explore, learn about the local environment, and enjoy the benefits of being outdoors. We recognise how important these green spaces are and are committed to ensuring that any development complements and protects the natural beauty and wellbeing benefits that Spring Mill already provides.
