The Issue

Growing and hearing about the rivers importance in our culture , I have always held a deep reverence for this river, which is more than just a stretch of water—it is a vital part of our cultural identity, a sacred entity worshiped and celebrated by millions across India. Yet, despite its immense spiritual significance, the Ganga faces an unprecedented crisis, marred by pollution and neglect.

Every day, approximately 2,723 million liters of sewage pour into the Ganga at 33 different points, turning this lifeline into a carrier of contaminants rather than purity and grace. These pollutants not only tarnish the river’s beauty but also endanger the health of millions who depend on it for their livelihood, religious practices, and as a water source.

The time to act is now. We propose organizing a nationwide competition aimed at cleaning the Ganga and addressing the 33 major sewage outlets contributing to its pollution. This initiative should not only encourage involvement at a community level but also ensure collaboration with local municipalities and sewage treatment experts.

Participants in the competition could undertake projects to redirect sewage to treatment plants, engage in riverbank cleanups, and raise awareness about pollution. This approach will not only cleanse the river but can also foster a sense of unity and shared responsibility, encouraging cities along the river to adopt sustainable practices in managing waste.

Successful models from around the world, such as the Thames River cleanup in the UK and local initiatives in Indian states like Kerala, have shown that coordinated, community-driven efforts can lead to substantial ecological recovery. Implementing suitable strategies designed with local contexts in mind can restore the Ganga to its rightful glory—clean, vibrant, and sacred.

I call upon the government, environmental organizations, NGOs, and all Indian citizens to back this proposed competition. Let's pay homage to this sacred river by restoring its purity and health. I urge you to sign this petition to launch a competition that could become a turning point in the journey to save the Ganga. Together, we can make a difference for future generations and honor the legacy of our ancestors. Please join me in supporting this cause and sign the petition today.
