Three Democratic governors said Thursday they won't let the United States back away from a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, despite President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, a pact involving nearly 200 nations aimed at slowing the warming of the planet.
Governor Brown of California joined Governor Jay Inslee of Washington state and Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York to form the U.S. Climate Alliance, which will work to uphold the agreement.
California, Washington, and New York can’t be the only states leading the fight for the climate. Sign my petition asking Oregon to join them.
Under the Paris agreement, the United States voluntarily committed to reducing polluting emissions by 1.6 billion tons by 2025, or 26 - 28% from 2005 levels. The governors' new pact commits their states to that same goal – and so can Oregon.
California, New York and Washington together account for about 10 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, and the more states that join them, the better our chances of keeping global temperature increases below 2 degrees. Any higher and climate scientists tell us that our planet will quickly become uninhabitable.
Oregon Governor Brown has a history of advocating for the environment, but her support is more important now than ever.
Please make Oregon a climate leader and join the Climate Alliance.
