The proposed Dorchester Road Expansion project has been a source of deep concern for many residents and business owners in Dorchester County, SC. As a resident, I have witnessed firsthand the daily disruptions these plans could cause. The commute east or westbound on Dorchester Road is a daily struggle. But roadway expansion is not the answer. Additionally, many cherished local businesses, which are the backbone of our community, are facing the threat of closure due to this expansion.

The planned expansion is aimed at improving traffic flow, but the costs seem to outweigh the benefits. The Federal Highway Administration and numerous other reports show that across the US, expanding roadways does not affect traffic congestion.

Studies have shown that such expansions often lead to more traffic congestion in the long run, not less. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, road expansions typically lead to an increase in vehicle miles traveled, which in turn increases congestion rather than alleviating it. This defeats the very purpose of the project and will inevitably lead to more frustration for commuters.

Moreover, the proposed expansion poses environmental concerns. Cutting through green spaces and landscapes will damage local ecosystems and could have adverse effects on our environment, something we should strive to protect for future generations.

The impact on businesses in the Oakbrook section of the proposed corridor is devastating; they will cease to exist. These are local establishments that contribute significantly to the local economy. 

It's essential that we, as a community, come together to voice our opposition to this project. There needs to be a comprehensive impact analysis and consideration of alternative solutions that would not compromise the livelihoods of residents and local business owners. One such solution is implementing AI technology at all intersections, which evaluates traffic flow in real time with traffic light management solutions.
