Opposing The Use Of Generative AI At Delta

Opposing The Use Of Generative AI At Delta
The Issue
My name is Silas Gould, and I'm currently in 11th grade at State College Area High School, with 3 of my classes at Delta High. Delta has been a welcoming environment for me, accepting me when the school I moved away from didn't. Despite this, I am incredibly disappointed with the school's use of generative AI in its branding.
With the rise of artificial intelligence, especially ChatGPT and its image generation software, more and more people have been using generative AI (as opposed to analytical AI) for their personal branding. This may not seem like an issue, but the majority of AI users do not understand that they are harming the environment and the creative community.
Water is used to cool down AI servers during usage. With continued use, over 587 million gallons of water are used on purely ChatGPT a month (that's 7.14 billion a year). That's enough to give a glass of water to every person in the world. AI also significantly depletes energy resources and harms creative jobs and artists by stealing their work to train its models.
An artist Delta hired used generative AI to create concepts for an upcoming mural project. The majority of these designs confused students, as they did not align with the themes of the school. One design was Halloween themed, and another seemed to be made of rocks that don't exist in the real world.
If 20 prompts were used to generate these images, half a liter of water was wasted. With Delta having an environmental panel earlier this marking period, it would be beneficial for everyone to learn about AI's environmental effects.
In another example, AI was used to create one of Delta's two final logo designs. The design is structurally confusing and contains many typos. At least one design statement was generated by ChatGPT, if not both.
As Delta is a democratic school, they should listen to their students when we say not to use AI.
(No AI was used to generate this description, the photo, or any other assignments I've done. I spent 20 minutes on this because I'm upset.)
