The Issue

As a nearby resident of the Mohr facility in Oak Park, Illinois, I am deeply opposed to the proposed special use zoning for QuikTrip Corporation at 1137-1155 Garfield Street and 915 Maple Street. The prospect of a gas station in our neighborhood raises significant concerns for the safety, health, and wellbeing of our community.

Gas stations are notorious for releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, contributing to air pollution and posing health risks to those living nearby and those who enjoy Maple Park (Heidari et al., 2024). The increase in traffic would disrupt an already busy intersection (Harlem and 290), diminishing the quality of life for all residents. Additionally, the presence of gas stations is often linked to increased violent crime, posing a further threat to community safety (Boehme et al., 2022).

Moreover, in 2022, our village board adopted the "Climate Ready OP" initiative, a firm commitment to reducing Oak Park’s dependence on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable energy solutions. Allowing the construction of a new gas station directly contradicts this progressive policy and undermines our community’s environmental goals.

We must prioritize the long-term health and safety of Oak Park residents and uphold our commitment to a sustainable future. I urge the Oak Park Village Board to reject the special use zoning request for QuikTrip at the specified location and consider alternative developments that align better with our village’s environmental and social objectives.

Join me in preserving the integrity and safety of our neighborhood. Show your support for a greener, safer Oak Park by signing this petition.
