The Issue

18 months after Dundee University announced a £30m blackhole, students continue to take the hit for financial mismanagement and poor governance.

To date the University has already undergone two rounds of voluntary severance, downsized the eight academic schools to four faculties, and enforced a recruitment freeze. Now they have proposed to cut crucial campus institutions, over 200 more staff, and three vital programmes.

The following proposed cuts will fundamentally alter an already poor student life at Dundee University:

-              210 FTE roles

-              Closure of Philosophy Programme

-              Closure of Languages Programme

-              Closure of Mathematics Programme

-              Closure of English for International Students Programme

-              Closure of Botanic Gardens

-              Closure of Cooper Gallery

-              Cuts to Support Services (Student Funding, Global Room, Enquiry Centre)

-              Closure of University Chaplaincy

-              Closure of University Nursery

With the loss of another 210 FTE roles, the total staff departures since the crisis began will reach around 1000; a quarter of the pre-crisis workforce.

These plans are deeply concerning.

Following these cuts, the university would be unrecognisable, and the impact on the city would be catastrophic.

To the UEG: we, the students who make the university, call for you to reconsider these decisions.

These cuts are not the answer and will do nothing but destroy the reputation of the university and the thriving community that it brings to the city.

To the Scottish government: We urge you to intervene. Do not allow the UEG to cause irreparable damage to the university and the city.

And finally, to our fellow students: We urge you to join the struggle in whatever way you can. Tell your lecturers and support staff how much they mean to you.

Sign the petition, protest, spread awareness and email the principal to voice your opposition to the cuts (NSeaton001@dundee.ac.uk).
