The Issue

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of Mayor Chen, the council members, and all the citizens of Torrance who came out to protest to keep our city safe—and to everyone who sent emails opposing this wrong location—we have successfully closed this case. Weingart has officially withdrawn its application, meaning there will be no Homekey Plus project at this Torrance site. This victory would not have been possible without the dedication of everyone who signed the petition, spoke up, and took action for our community. Although we’ve successfully ensured that Torrance remains a safe place to live, we’ve decided to keep the petition open for transparency and public record. If you’d like to understand the background and details of this case, please follow the link below. 👉 C.A.R.E. Torrance Report: https://sites.google.com/view/c-a-r-e-torrance/home ————————————- ———- ❗ Please note: DO NOT MAKE DONATION.   Any donations go directly to the change.org website and NOT to individuals or the petition organizers. Homekey Plus is a permanent supportive housing program intended for individuals with behavioral health challenges, including those experiencing serious mental illness or substance use disorders. More details can be found on the City of Torrance website: https://www.torranceca.gov/Home/Components/News/News/5126/ (added 7/9/2025) Torrance Councilmembers unanimously voted no on the Homekey+ Project at this location. The proposed Torrance Homekey-Plus Project is set to be located at the Extended Stay America, 3525 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503, amid schools, a public library, churches, and vital businesses. This strategic positioning raises significant concerns over the disruption it could cause to the safety, security, and daily routines of local families, students, small businesses, and worshippers.

Placing a high-needs housing facility immediately adjacent to educational and community institutions may inadvertently put our children and citizens at risk. Such a development doesn't only threaten the peaceful nature of our neighborhoods but also potentially impacts the educational environments and the sense of sanctuary these institutions provide.

Moreover, the amendment process for this project was alarmingly rushed. With little notice given to the Torrance community, there has been inadequate time for public discussion and input, leading to feelings of frustration and neglect among residents. A project of this magnitude warrants thorough examination, community dialogue, and transparent decision-making processes to ensure it meets the standards and values of Torrance.

It's essential to highlight that while supporting housing initiatives for high-needs individuals is imperative, the proposed location fails to consider the broader implications for our community. Alternative locations which do not directly infringe upon critical community spaces should be explored and evaluated.

For these reasons, we urge local decision-makers to halt the project in its current form, explore viable alternatives, and engage in open dialogue with the Torrance community. Sign this petition to lend your voice in opposition to the current location of the Torrance Homekey-Plus Project and advocate for a safer and more secure community solution.
