The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the current situation facing unionized government employees in Nova Scotia. As a dedicated worker, I am aware that many of us have been thriving under the hybrid work model that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, despite the lack of clear evidence supporting a return to the office full-time, there is a growing mandate forcing us back.

The decision to mandate a full return to the office disregards significant data showing the positive impact of hybrid work environments. Studies have consistently demonstrated that hybrid work models increase productivity, improve work-life balance, and reduce stress levels for employees. According to a study by Statistics Canada, remote work during the pandemic resulted in increased productivity for 32% of workers while decreasing for a mere 4%. Furthermore, a recent survey by Gallup reported that 56% of employees prefer a blend of in-office and remote work, asserting it leads to better performance.

This mandate not only threatens the well-being of employees but also dismisses the progress and efficiencies we have achieved through remote work. Many of us have grown accustomed to a flexible working environment that allows us to perform at our best, while effectively balancing personal and professional responsibilities. Moreover, a full-time return to the office increases unnecessary commute times and contributes to traffic and environmental pollution.

We urge the government to reconsider this decision and engage in a meaningful dialogue with union representatives to explore alternative options that sustain employee well-being and productivity. Maintaining a hybrid work model acknowledges the diverse needs and circumstances of the workforce, while still enabling effective government operations.

Please join us in opposing the full-time return to office mandate that affects unionized government employees in Nova Scotia. We need your support to ensure that our voices are heard and our working conditions remain conducive to high productivity and job satisfaction. Sign this petition and help us advocate for a more flexible and sustainable future for workers in Nova Scotia. Your signature can make a difference.
