Oppose the Rail Price increase for Greystones and Balbriggan

Oppose the Rail Price increase for Greystones and Balbriggan
The Issue
Fares Not Fair!
New rail fares must be reversed.
Commuters in towns like Balbriggan, Skerries, Greystones and elsewhere were hit this week with huge hikes in price of their rail tickets.
A new zoning system introduced by Irish Rail, and approved by the National Transport Authority and Government sees the cost of a single cash fare from Greystones and Balbriggan to Dublin Connolly from €3.90 to €5.10 and a return cash fare from €7.20 to €9.20; a 30% jump!
The price has also increased if you use a leap card.
Balbriggan, Greystones and other towns are reliant on rail for access to the city. The main roads to the city are already congested and these hikes will see more and more forced into car usage. Young workers and students often struggling on minimum wages will be particularly hit. These towns also suffer from a deficit in radial public transport options and commuters have to travel into the city in order to reach destinations on other parts of the commuter belt.
These hikes are a callous slap in the face for struggling commuters, and they fly in the face of promises made by this Government to support public transport and encourage people out of their cars; they must be reversed.
They are using a false justification that the hikes are fair because they are connected to the distance traveled; this is insane and would mean massive hikes in the future for inter city services or services to remote towns across the country. Public transport should never operate like this and the costs should not punish commuters who live away from the city because they cant afford to live closer to their workplace or college.
If Irish Rail, the National Transport Authority or the Government are serious about Climate Action they must immediately reverse these hikes.
Actions you can take:
• Sign this online petition to Irish Rail and the NTA
• Contact Government TDs in your area to oppose these hikes (Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and some Independents)
• Demand Zone 2 pricing is scrapped entirely and that NO town is faced with these hikes
PUBLIC TRANSPORT MUST BE FREE, FREQUENT AND ACCESSIBLE.
