The issue

The proposed development of a mega waste dump at Blakebrook threatens the integrity of Widjabul Country within the sacred Bundjalung Nation. This proposal, if enacted, would severely impact both the environment and the community whose lives are inextricably linked to this land. Our rich cultural heritage, biodiversity, and water quality are all in peril due to the potential establishment of this large-scale waste facility.

Widjabul Country, revered for its unparalleled beauty and ecological significance, is the heart and soul of the local community. It is not merely a tract of land, but a living entity central to the cultural and spiritual existence of the Widjabul people. Placing a mega dump here would desecrate an area that is not only ecologically fragile but is also a repository of generations of cultural and spiritual significance.

The broader Lismore community is also at stake. We depend on pristine environments for our livelihoods, our health, and our well-being. Introducing a massive waste facility risks contaminating our water sources, contributing to pollution, and disrupting local wildlife.

Studies indicate that landfills pose significant environmental risks, including leachate seepage that contaminates ground and surface water, as well as the emission of gases like methane that contribute to climate change. Implementing this mega dump would contradict our commitment to sustainable practices and undermine our community’s efforts to transition towards a circular economy.

Moreover, alternative waste management solutions exist and must be explored thoroughly. By investing in recycling initiatives, waste reduction strategies, and sustainable technologies, we can protect both our environment and the economy. The growth of such initiatives not only fosters community resilience but also aligns with global environmental goals to reduce landfills.

We urge the Lismore City Council, the New South Wales Government, and all relevant authorities to reject any proposals that establish or expand a waste facility at Blakebrook. Let us protect Widjabul Country and invest in sustainable alternatives that promise a healthier future for our community and environment.

Preserve our environmental heritage and honor the cultural and spiritual heritage of the Widjabul people by standing against this proposal. Sign this petition to voice your opposition and help safeguard the future of Widjabul Country and the broader Lismore community. Together, we can ensure a sustainable, respectful, and prosperous future for all.
