As a resident of Minnesota I'm deeply affected by the proposed bills HF4780 and SF5080, I am compelled to voice my concern. These bills, if passed, would transfer ownership of public land and lake area of Upper Red Lake Minnesota to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians. This change would eliminate all public fishing, hunting, and land use around upper red lake - activities that many locals depend on for their livelihoods.

Moreover, this legislation threatens to force landowners and business owners to abandon their properties. The impact on the community cannot be overstated; it's not just about losing access to recreational activities but also about losing homes and businesses that they've worked hard for.

Upper Red Lake is one of Minnesota's largest lakes with a surface area of 288,800 acres (USGS). It has been a source of livelihood for thousands through fishing and hunting. The passage of these bills could potentially displace these individuals without any clear plan for their future.

It's crucial that we stand together against these proposed changes that threaten our way of life in Upper Red Lake. We respect the rights and traditions of the Red Lake Band Chippewa Indians but believe there must be a fair solution that does not infringe upon our own rights as residents.
