The Issue

I remember a time when our streets felt safer. The quieter days when our community wasn't dotted with so many liquor stores and gas stations, each contributing in its own way to an unsettling rise in disturbance and traffic. With each new liquor store that opens, our neighborhood loses a bit of its tranquility, and we see an increase in alcohol-related incidents. These incidents go beyond nuisance; they pose serious safety risks to our families, our friends, and our children. Higher availability of liquor leads to more impaired driving and public disturbances, affecting the peace and safety of our town.

Similarly, the proposition to open additional gas stations in our town raises significant concerns. Each added establishment brings with it an increase in traffic congestion and heightens the risk of accidents. Our streets, already bustling and sometimes overwhelming, may become hotspots for traffic-related incidents, making it more dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers alike.

Our town, vibrant yet small, should prioritize safety and community well-being over unchecked commercial expansion. We want aware, thoughtful growth that enhances the quality of life, not diminishes it. Uncontrolled opening of such establishments without regard for public consultation or impact assessments does not take into account the long-term consequences on our community's safety, environment, and character.

Studies have shown a direct correlation between the number of alcohol outlets and the incidence of alcohol-related crimes and accidents in urban areas. This isn't just a concern; it's a reality proven by data and experienced by those living in neighborhoods inundated with such outlets. Likewise, traffic congestion and accidents have been linked to an oversaturation of gas stations, often transforming peaceful community streets into dangerous thoroughfares.

We need to take a stand, for our children, for our safety, and for the future of our town. We call upon local government officials to carefully consider the implications of allowing more liquor stores and gas stations to open. Public safety must come first, and any future commercial developments should be planned with the community's voice at the forefront.

Please join us in urging our town council to impose stricter regulations and conduct thorough impact assessments prior to approving any new liquor store or gas station. We need responsible development that respects our community's integrity and prioritizes public safety.
