The Issue

Imagine being able to connect with friends instantly, no matter where they are in the world. While growing up, social media provided me with a platform to express myself, share my thoughts, and seek out communities that made me feel less alone. It became a safe haven amidst turbulent teenage years—a place where I could be myself and speak my truth. As much as it facilitated communication, it also allowed me to find support and solace when I needed it the most.

However, the introduction of the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) threatens to strip away these vital online freedoms. The KOSA Act is portrayed as a legislative effort to protect minors from harmful online content, but in reality, it imposes strict regulations on content, limiting the breadth and depth of what teenagers can access online. This act could result in widespread censorship under the guise of 'protection,' inadvertently silencing the voices of young people.

A report from the National Consumers League indicates that nearly 75% of teenagers use social media to discuss issues they can't talk about elsewhere. Additionally, according to the Pew Research Center, social media is the predominant platform where teenagers develop social skills and maintain friendships in the digital age. By restricting their access, the KOSA Act could hinder personal growth and social interaction essential for the well-being of young people today.

The internet is a tool that, when used wisely and responsibly, can foster learning and empowerment among teenagers. Instead of resorting to outright censorship, we need to consider solutions that ensure online safety while also preserving freedom. These could include increased digital literacy programs in schools or the implementation of more nuanced, tech-based moderation tools that allow safe and open communication.

Please join me in opposing the KOSA Act, and help preserve a space where young people can safely explore, engage, and grow. Together, we can ensure that the online world remains a supportive and enriching environment for the next generation. Sign this petition to protect digital freedom for our youth.
