Oppose the Conversion of The Depot into a Public Restroom - Logansport, Indiana

The Issue

We, the concerned citizens of Logansport, Indiana, are voicing our strong opposition to several proposed changes that threaten our town's historical landmarks, and misallocate taxpayer funds. These include converting the historic "Depot" into public restrooms, abandoning the Iron Horse Museum—a cherished local landmark—and using taxpayer money for office renovations for Logan's Landing. These decisions do not reflect our community's values or interests.

While we understand the need for public restrooms and a welcome center in the community, we advocate for a thoughtful and separate approach. We propose the construction of a standalone facility, apart from the historical "Depot" at 421 4th Street, to cater to the needs of residents and visitors without compromising the integrity of this cherished landmark.

Equally distressing is the abandonment of the Iron Horse Museum—a valuable local institution that serves as an essential educational resource highlighting Logansport's historic connection with railroads. We strongly encourage the City Council to ensure that the Iron Horse Museum continues to operate as a museum, in the Depot, preserving the invaluable history it represents.

Moreover, we strongly object to the proposed use of taxpayer money for office renovations for Logan's Landing. As a non-governmental entity, Logan's Landing should not be privileged with public funds for its office improvements. We believe public resources should be allocated responsibly and transparently, especially when it comes to entities that are not part of the city government.

Preserving our historical landmarks like the Depot and Iron Horse Museum is not just an act of maintaining our town's unique character, but also a strategic investment in tourism. The tourism industry has proven to be a significant economic contributor, bringing over $200 million into Cass County in 2019, as reported by the Indiana Tourism Association. We believe that preserving our history can further enhance Logansport's appeal to visitors and contribute to the local economy. We believe converting the Depot into a public restroom facility does not serve to this end.

In light of these concerns, we respectfully urge Mayor Martin and the City Council to reconsider these alterations to the Depot,  and prioritize the preservation of Logansport's history. Let us invest wisely in what makes Logansport special, ensuring that future generations can appreciate and learn from our town's unique heritage.

We kindly request your attention to this matter and appreciate your commitment to serving the best interests of the Logansport community.
