Oppose the Construction of Truck Stop in Willowbrook
Oppose the Construction of Truck Stop in Willowbrook
The Issue
Subject: Please oppose the construction of QuikTrip Truck Stop in Willowbrook (91st St and IL-83 intersection)
We are residents of Dupage county who are deeply concerned about the public health hazard a QuikTrip truck stop on IL-83 would pose to our community. These lots should be used for developments that enrich the culture and well being of our residents. Approving a QuikTrip truck stop would be a harmful construction that puts children and all residents in danger. Based on the following reasons, we strongly implore the board to deny zoning approval for this project.
- IL-83 and 91st is an already busy intersection for Anne M Jean elementary school, Burr Ridge Middle School, and 4 places of worship to which community members routinely walk: the St Kirils Macedonian Orthodox Church, the Mecca Center Mosque, the Wat Buddha Dhamma Meditation Center, and the Anjuman-e-saifee Masjid. 91st in particular is a narrow two way road. Placing a truck stop in that area would make the intersection even more dangerous for pedestrians, particularly young children who are out of the bus stop radius and walk to and from school and religious community activities. It is deeply concerning that children could easily become victims of motor vehicle accidents in the area.
- Air pollution: the truck stop would increase exhaust and air pollution where residents and children routinely have outdoor activities when weather permits
- Food desert: the intersection strip mall, which would be demolished to build the truck stop, currently hosts 2 food establishments, 7 Star Quick Shop and Damascus Falafel. Both of these establishments provide nutritious options of lean meats and fresh produce. 7 Star Quick Shop is the ONLY supermarket within a walkable mile radius that provides fresh produce at a reasonable cost. The remaining food sources are limited to fast food and packaged foods or are too expensive for low income families. 95% of students in district 180 receive free or reduced price lunch.
- Delays to school: students who attend Burr Ridge Middle School or Hinsdale South High School from Burr Ridge rely on this route for commuting to school. This portion of IL-83 and 91st St already has high traffic during morning rush hour as it is located near the exit to I-55. Increasing semi-truck traffic will further delay students from arriving on time to their school day.
- Health care access: there are 2 Pillars Community Health clinics on 91st St on either side of the intersection. It is important to maintain safe, walkable access to these centers for free health and social services for both patients and the providers who live in the community.
