The Issue

As parents and teachers of children attending a nearby school, as well as residents and others who regularly use Meteor Street and surrounding roads, we are firmly against the proposed closure of Meteor Street under the School Streets scheme. We believe the primary users of this street, the parents, prioritise the safety of all children and are mindful of the school surroundings. It's crucial to mention that for over a decade, there have been no reported accidents, proving the existing model to be successful and safe.

The specified downsides of the proposed measures include heightened pollution levels due to idling cars in congested roads, hazardous backing of cars onto the extremely busy Clapham Common Northside, increased risk of collisions (one having already occurred on day one of this scheme), lack of space for safe passing or turning of all vehicles, including cycles. There is no sound evidence proving that the current use of Meteor Street poses a safety risk. Therefore, the proposed closure seems unnecessary and potentially harmful.

On the occasions when we are unable to walk or cycle, we deserve to have vehicle access to Meteor Street during school drop-off and pick-up times. This is a fundamental right for us to take our children to and from school in a safe manner. Restricting the access to Meteor Street threatens this right and poses safety risks for our children and every road user in the area.

We assert, the proposed closure of Meteor Street will result in increased congestion, increased pollution levels, and higher safety risks in other surrounding streets. This could be detrimental to the wellbeing of our children and the wider community. Our plea is that rather than closing Meteor Street, efforts should be taken in making the area safer for all its users, which means leaving Meteor Street open to provide crucial, safe access and parking.

Stand with us and oppose this proposed closure. We invite you to sign this petition and protect not only the right for safety of our children, but also every road user of Meteor Street.
