The Issue

The proposed location for the Brea Supportive Housing Project at 323 North Brea Avenue has raised significant concerns within our community, particularly regarding its close proximity to Brea Junior High School. This decision impacts not only the families and residents nearby, but also poses potential safety risks to our children. Residents of the PSH Project may have previously experienced homelessness often with existing mental, physical, or substance abuse disabilities.

While it is important to support initiatives that provide housing solutions to those in need, the placement of such projects must be carefully considered to ensure the safety and well-being of our youth. The proposed site is appropriately 1000 feet away from Brea Junior High, exposing our children potential risks associated with such housing projects.

Our city has a responsibility to guarantee the safety of all its residents, especially its younger population. According to the CDC, the proximity of children to adult populations with complex needs must be managed effectively to limit exposure to potentially hazardous situations. Furthermore, studies from the American Planning Association emphasize the importance of strategic planning and placement of facilities like supportive housing to prevent community disruption and ensure safety.

Alternative locations exist within Brea that can accommodate this project without compromising the safety of school-going children. We urge the city council and mayor to reconsider the chosen site at 323 North Brea Avenue and explore these alternatives where supportive housing could be provided responsibly and safely away from the immediate sphere of influence surrounding schools.

Join us in advocating for a safer placement of the Brea Supportive Housing Project. Sign our petition to show the city council and mayor our collective commitment to child safety and responsible urban planning.
