The Issue

This appeal arises from a deeply personal and communal concern. The proposed increase in the Bakersfield City sewer rates is a financial burden too heavy for homeowners, renters, and businesses in our community. This increase will be particularly felt along Cottonwood Road and its nearby residents, where a new Sewer project is under way, causing an inevitable rise in the cost of living. Homeowners and people with fixed or non-fixed incomes are already grappling with the impacts of inflation. This sewer increase will further drain essential funds initially meant for household necessities like food, electricity for air conditioning during summer, gas, and other basic needs. Potential consequences include a projected 10% increase in rental costs. To put it in perspective, for renters currently paying $1,500, expect an unnecessary additional expense of $150 per year due to the sewer rate increase. This rate hike is thus more than just a financial issue: it affects commerce, lifestyles, and the welfare of the residents and community members. While we acknowledge the integral role of sewer maintenance for our health, safety, and welfare, we argue that the burden of funding should not disproportionately fall on residents already under financial stress. Let us collectively oppose this proposed increase and seek more equitable solutions. Join us by signing this petition and standing up against the Bakersfield City sewer rate increase.
