Petition Against the Proposed Amendment to Subordinate Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2023 and the Dog Exercise Area Regional Plan
We, the undersigned residents of the Sunshine Coast, respectfully petition the Sunshine Coast Council to reconsider the proposed amendments to Subordinate Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2023 and the related Dog Exercise Area Regional Plan.
Reasons for Petition:
1. Reduction in Off-Leash Areas: We oppose reducing off-leash areas at Stumers Creek, a popular tourism destination, and other locations mentioned in the plan (including but not limited to prohibited areas such as Point Arkwright and Point Perry). Tourists and locals visit to enjoy the off leash beach experience with their dogs. The proposed changes, including moving the off-leash area north of the creek, are potentially dangerous due to strong undercurrents and rocks that become exposed at high tide. This could create hazards for children, elderly, and small dogs, especially in the event of an emergency.
2. Dog Safety Concerns: The proposed on leash beach area (72 to 69) may prove unsafe for the large volume of leashed (and long leashed) dogs should they become tangled, leading to anxious behaviours and fights. The stretch of beach proposed as a leashed option is currently where dogs enjoy swimming, running and playing with their handlers, and have done so for many years. Currently there are no flags to indicate potential dangers.
3. Community Impact: Ideal for dog and human socialisation. Many people travel from Brisbane and beyond to avoid the fenced dog parks that can over stimulate some dogs into aggressive behaviour and fighting. The Stumers area offers a safer, more relaxed
environment for dogs and owners. There are minimal significant issues with dog behaviour at this location, and the community enjoys this unique feature.
4. The Environment: According to locals, some involved in looking after the dune and creek areas, there is minimal direct impact to birds and wildlife in and around the creek or surrounding bush areas specifically caused by dogs. Issues with the creek appear to stem from storm water drains when the seawater ceases to flow.
We ask the Sunshine Coast Council to:
1. Maintain the current off-leash areas at Stumers Creek.
2. Ensure that any changes protect the safety of dogs, residents, and tourists.
3. Increase consultation with local residents to better understand the needs of pet owners.
We urge the Council to halt the proposed amendments and engage in further consultation before moving forward
