Oppose "Smoke 2 Snack" Shop in Edgemont Village

The Issue

Edgemont Village is the heart of a family‑centred community where children and teenagers are present every day. The proposed opening of a “Smoke 2 Snack” shop in this location is deeply concerning. The site is within close proximity to three preschools, two elementary schools, and a high school, and sits just two doors down from a children’s bookstore and toy store—businesses that explicitly serve young families.

Placing a vaping and tobacco retailer in such an environment exposes youth to harmful and addictive substances at an age when they are most vulnerable. Research consistently shows that early exposure and easy access significantly increase the likelihood of experimentation and long‑term dependency. Allowing this type of business in a high‑traffic youth area directly contradicts efforts to protect young people and promote healthy choices.

This proposal also undermines the values Edgemont Village represents. The presence of a vaping store beside child‑focused businesses sends a conflicting and harmful message about what is acceptable in a family‑friendly space. The environment we create shapes behaviour, particularly for impressionable teens, and this placement normalizes products known to pose serious health risks.

We are calling on City Council, relevant licensing authorities, and the property owner to reconsider and revoke approval for this shop at the proposed location. Alternative locations exist that do not directly expose children and teens to tobacco and vaping products.

By signing this petition, you are standing up for the safety, health, and future of Edgemont Village’s young people. Our community must remain a place where families feel confident that their children are protected—not targeted.
