The Issue

Are you concerned about the proposed Sheetz gas station coming to our neighborhood? You are not alone. Together, we can raise our voices and stand up for the health, safety, and character of our community. The Sheetz station was not approved by our GPZ Committee (comprised of council members). It was then voted down by our Planning Commission. So Sheetz has filed two lawsuits/Appeals against the City.

Why oppose?

·        Environmental Risks: Gas stations are known sources of pollution—both to the air we breathe and the land we live on. Fuel spills, leaks, and runoff can seep into the soil and groundwater, threatening local ecosystems and the health of our families.

·        Light Pollution due to its operating 24/7/365.

·        Traffic Congestion & Safety: Increased vehicle traffic from a busy gas station will result in more congestion, noise pollution, and a higher risk of accidents. This intersection already has safety issues. Sheetz locations are open 24/7/365, making our streets busier at all hours and jeopardizing pedestrian safety.

·        Impact on Property Values: Numerous studies have shown that proximity to gas stations can reduce the value of nearby homes. The constant activity, noise, and potential for pollution deter new buyers and affect the hard-earned investment in your home.

·        Not in Line with Community Vision: Our town is known for its welcoming atmosphere, green spaces, and family-friendly environment. A large corporate gas station contradicts the small-town charm and sense of community that we all cherish. We deserve development that reflects our values and enhances, rather than detracts from, our quality of life.

·        Public Health Concerns: Gas stations release harmful emissions, such as benzene and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are linked to respiratory problems, cancer, and other serious health issues. Children are especially vulnerable to these pollutants, putting our next generation at risk.

·        Better Alternatives Exist: Our area is already served by existing fuel stations and delis. Instead of another gas station, let’s support businesses that bring positive growth—like small businesses, parks, or community centers.
