The Issue
I am deeply concerned about the rezoning of approximately 90.21 acres of land owned by Patrick McClary, III, from Forest Agriculture (FA) and Limited Industrial (LI) to a Planned Development (PD). This land, specifically identified as TMS#02-0422-011-10-02 and 02-0422-011-08-00, is slated to transition from Agricultural (AG) to Professional Residential (PD) and Industrial (LI). I urge the County Council to deny this request and preserve the integrity of our agricultural land and the quality of life for existing residents.
The first and foremost reason for our opposition is the preservation of our agricultural heritage. The conversion of prime agricultural land into medium to high-density developments represents an irreversible loss. Agricultural land is an essential green space that supports local wildlife, provides a buffer against urban heat, and acts as a carbon sink to combat climate change.
Allowing rezoning would contribute to overdevelopment, which strains infrastructure and public services, such as schools, roads, and emergency services, ultimately affecting the quality of life for all local residents. Increased traffic, noise pollution, and environmental degradation are just a few of the negative consequences we could face.
Moreover, the economic value of our agricultural land extends beyond just crops and livestock. It contributes to local food security, backs our economy through agricultural tourism, and maintains the open spaces that define our community's character. We take pride in our agricultural legacy and the serene lifestyle it affords.
I implore local residents, stakeholders, and community advocates to stand with me in preventing the rezoning that threatens the essence of our rural community. We must prioritize sustainable development that respects this precious land’s environmental, economic, and cultural value.
Please join me in speaking against this proposal and protecting our cherished agricultural landscape. Your signature can make a huge difference. Let the County Council know that our community’s future matters to all of us.
