The Issue

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the proposed relocation of the westbound Big Blue Bus stop from its current location on Pico WB and 33rd to a new spot directly in front of Bay Shades, Interdental and Good Body Pilates Studio on Pico Blvd, across from the Trader Joe's.

This change, part of the East Pico Safety Project, was announced without meaningful outreach or consultation with the affected businesses and community members. The relocation threatens the survival of small, independent businesses and raises serious concerns including:

-Loss of vital parking spaces used daily by elderly, disabled, pregnant clients, and others needing close access.

-Decreased foot traffic and reduced storefront visibility crucial to business survival.

-Blocked storefronts and hindered customer access.

-Disruption to medical offices and retail operations dependent on street visibility and curbside pick-up.

-Increased noise, congestion, pollution directly outside these businesses, that disrupts a quiet restorative space, a calming escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

-Potential decline in property values by placing transit infrastructure directly in front of retail entrances.

We support pedestrian safety and mobility improvements, but these must be community-informed, economically sustainable, and considerate of local businesses’ needs.

We respectfully urge the City of Santa Monica to:

-Halt the bus stop relocation until thorough community engagement occurs.

-Explore alternative locations that do not eliminate essential parking or block business access.

-Collaborate directly with the Pico Improvement Organization, local business owners, and residents to find solutions that support the corridor’s vitality.

-Your signature will help ensure community voices are heard and that Pico Blvd remains a thriving, safe, and welcoming neighborhood for all.

Consider alternate solutions such as:

-Moving the westbound crosswalk in front of Interdental and Good Body Pilates Studio, so the bus doesn’t pull into the crosswalk.

-And/or move the bus stop in front of where Valentino’s used to be. This building is unoccupied and has been for several years.

-Discuss alternative solutions with the businesses that are being affected.
