The Issue

Project Orchid, a proposed metal manufacturing development initiative, threatens to disrupt the balance of our community's natural resources and negatively impact the daily lives and health of our citizens. At its core, this project involves large-scale construction that could lead to the depletion of our local resources, including water supplies, green spaces, and ecosystems that are vital to our environment and our way of life.

Our community has long been a place where nature thrives alongside human habitation, offering a peaceful and sustainable environment for all residents. The introduction of Project Orchid could mean irreversible damage to our rich biodiversity. For instance, local wildlife habitats may be destroyed, leading to the possible extinction of native species that cannot survive in altered environments. This not only harms the flora and fauna but also destabilizes the delicate balance of our ecosystem.

Moreover, the project's implications reach beyond environmental concerns. The influx of metal manufacturing activity can lead to increased noise pollution, road congestion, and air quality deterioration, affecting the health and well-being of our community members. The potential strain on our public infrastructure—such as water supplies, roads, and loss of natural resources i.e. Curry Creek that fills our water reservoir runs through this property —is also a significant concern, possibly leading to overcrowding and stretched resources.

Financially, Project Orchid poses a threat as it may lead to increased taxes to support the new infrastructure demands, burdening the citizens of the community without ensuring a fair return on investment or tangible benefits for local residents.

Health-wise, Project Orchid poses a risk to every person in Jefferson and Jackson county and our future generations. “Heavy metals are the emerging environmental pollutants. They may accumulate in soil, water, and air and enter the food chain. Humans are exposed to these agents through oral, dermal and nasal routes. After entering the human body, heavy metals may reach various organs and cause health issues. Long-term exposure increases the risk of cancers associated with the lungs, breast, skin, GI tract, and prostate. Toxic heavy metals trigger oxidative stress by increasing free radical production and disrupting redox homeostasis. Free radicals damage DNA bases, and if not repaired by the DNA repair mechanism, these alterations can lead to mutations. These mutations increase the risk of cancer by inducing inflammatory molecules and disrupting the cell cycle mediators. Excess metals can also disrupt cellular defenses and modulate signaling pathways, leading to uncontrolled cell proliferation.”

Our community deserves to have its voice heard in matters that directly affect our future and our environment. We urge the local government to prioritize sustainable development projects that preserve the unique character and livability of our area.

I am aware of the issue and am engaging with the public through email, calls, and personal conversations. I have engaged with the developer directly to request quality of life concessions for our residents regarding Project Orchid as well as the site as it is now zoned. I am happy to answer any questions from Jefferson residents to the best of my knowledge and understanding. I have not decided my final vote since all of the information is not available.
