These serious offences are being treated as a high priority, and we wish to inform the the public of the definition of these crimes, their legal consequences, and how you can assist in the investigation.
ONLINE HARASSMENT AND DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER
Online harassment involves the repeated and intentional use of electronic means such as social media, email or other digital platforms to intimidate, threaten or distress an individual.
Defamation of character is the intentional false communication that harms the reputation of an individual.
Both offences carry serious legal consequences, including imprisionment for up to 3 years or substantial fines and potential civil action for damages.
INTIMIDATION
If someone, without lawful reason threatens or harms another person to force them to act or stop acting in a certain way, they are committing a crime.
This includes actions like assault, damage to property, or making threats to harm or kill.
If someone's words or actions cause another person to fear for their safety or the safety of their property, they can also be charged with intimidation.
The penalty for intimidation can include a fine of up to R40 000.00, imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both."
