EXISTING WITH BABOONS - HOW TO MAKE LIFE EASIER
The George Municipality has said in a statement that residents need to learn to co-exist with baboons, as we humans have encroached on the natural habitat of the primates.
Pringle Bay is specifically mentioned in this article stating that according to studies conducted in the area by scientists, baboons play an important role in the ecosystem.
“Just a half a loaf of bread is equal to four hours of foraging in the fynbos for a female baboon, making up her daily nutritional supplement”
“We have no option but to deter them as possible from our waste. Translocations and elimination of “problem” animals have rarely solved the problem. Aggressive responses such as shooting or threatening “problem” can increase aggressive behaviour towards humans”.
“Baboon proof bins, baboon proof your homes, cage vegetable gardens and fruit trees and never feed baboons, don’t leave pet food outside.”
