Oppose NH HB720 the Ban on Importation of Live Bait into Our State

The Issue

As individuals who greatly value our local fishing culture, we voice our concerns regarding the proposed ban on importing live bait into our state. For many of us, bait stores provide not only livelihood but also keep the spirit of our community strong with access to fishing activities for both tourists and locals alike.

We currently do not have enough local lakes and ponds to support extensive trapping. Moreover, by allowing the importation of certified fish, we are ensuring not just a sustainable fishing future, but also protecting our local ecosystems.

Should this ban be enforced, numerous bait stores statewide would risk closure, dramatically impacting their owners, employees and customers, as well as considerably reducing access to fishing. Fishing tourism, a significant industry in our state, could also see a serious setback with potentially damaging consequences.

According to data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, fishing is a $48 billion industry, supporting over 800,000 jobs nationally. If we consider these figures, it becomes clear that the proposed ban doesn't only concern a hobby, but a major economic sector that many livelihoods depend on.

We strongly urge our local decision makers to consider these points and to stand against the ban on the importation of live bait. Let's work together to both protect and sustain our local economy and maintain the pastime loved by so many in our community. Please sign this petition to show your support.
