Oppose New Jersey Bill No. 5825 (A3394) on Homeschool Regulation
The Issue
I have had the unique experience of homeschooling my children, and through this journey, I have witnessed first-hand the unparalleled freedom and flexibility that homeschooling offers in tailoring education to the individual needs of our children. As a parent who has embraced this path, I am deeply concerned about New Jersey's proposed bill, No. 5825. This bill seeks to enforce the registration and oversight of home education programs by the local school district, potentially stripping away the fundamental rights of parents to decide the best educational approach for their own children.
The introduction of Bill No. 5825 is not just another piece of legislation; it is an encroachment on parental rights—a direct attempt to bring state control into an area where it has traditionally been absent. For generations, homeschooling has provided families with the opportunity to customize teaching methods and curricula to fit the learning styles and interests of their children without unnecessary intervention from the state.
Furthermore, homeschooling families in New Jersey have a proven record of academic success. According to the National Home Education Research Institute, homeschooled children often outperform their peers in traditional school settings on standardized academic achievement tests. Therefore, imposing additional regulations could hinder rather than help the educational outcomes of these students.
The bill’s requirements could also place an undue burden on both families and school districts, creating additional paperwork and logistical obstacles. Instead of placing unnecessary constraints on homeschooling families, the state should recognize and support the successful educational outcomes that these unique and personalized schooling environments can offer.
Finally, Bill No. 5825 will force parents to align any home education program with New Jersey Learning Standards. This requirement not only infringes on the rights of the parents to choose what material is taught inside their own home but also poses a threat to the faith and beliefs of the parents and their children. The State of New Jersey does not have the right to dictate what religion is practiced inside families' homes and therefore does not have the right to decide what is taught inside the home based on that religion.
It’s critical to stand against Bill No. 5825, preserving the autonomy of parents to home educate without undue state interference. Let us come together to protect the freedom that allows us to tailor our children’s education to their specific needs and aspirations.
Please sign this petition to oppose the passage of New Jersey Bill No. 5825 and defend the rights of parents to guide their children’s educational futures.
