Oppose Low Emissions Tax or Grant Road Bicycle Tax

Oppose Low Emissions Tax or Grant Road Bicycle Tax
The Issue
We, the undersigned, petition for a fair and equitable road tax policy that includes road bicycles, given that low-emission vehicles are going to be taxed for road use. While bicycles contribute to reduced traffic congestion and environmental benefits, they still utilize public infrastructure that requires maintenance and investment. As governments seek sustainable funding for roads, it is only reasonable that all road users contribute their fair share. A modest bicycle tax would ensure that cyclists contribute to the upkeep of the infrastructure they use, just as motorists—whether driving low-emission or traditional vehicles—are required to do. We urge policymakers to implement a fair taxation system that includes all road users to maintain and improve public roadways for everyone’s benefit.c
Cyclists often seem to believe they own the road, riding in large groups rather than maintaining a two-abreast formation, as recommended for safety and courtesy. This behavior not only slows down traffic but also creates unnecessary congestion, as drivers are forced to navigate around them, often in dangerous conditions. Despite dedicated cycle lanes—built and maintained at significant expense—many cyclists still choose to occupy main roads, seemingly without consequence. Unlike motorists, who face fines and penalties for obstructing traffic, cyclists often ride with impunity, disregarding the impact on other road users. While cycling has its benefits, a bit more awareness and consideration for all road users would go a long way in improving traffic flow and overall road safety.
