The Issue

*There is currently a paper petition at Mike's Guns and Sporting Goods in Benson for those that would rather sign a paper copy. I will be updating other locations or contacts as they become available. If anyone is interested in a paper copy to collect signatures, feel free to reach out to me or Mike for a copy or the document that can be sent to you multiple ways.

As a resident and hunter in Swift County, MN, I strongly oppose the proposed ordinance by the Swift County commissioners, which seeks to limit firearms deer season solely to shotguns within the county. This proposed restriction directly contradicts the decisions made at the state level by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MN DNR) and the legislature, which allow the use of legal rifles statewide during the firearm deer season.

The permission to use rifles during deer season is supported by evidence demonstrating that it is both safe and effective. Across Minnesota, hunters have responsibly used rifles for many years, contributing positively to wildlife management and the local economy. Limiting this practice without sufficient justification disrupts hunters' rights and unfairly singles out Swift County residents.

Furthermore, rifles allow for more precise and humane hunting methods, improving accuracy and reducing the chances of wounding deer. This aspect aligns with ethical hunting practices, which are paramount for ensuring that our wildlife is managed with respect and responsibility.

The proposed ordinance does not provide any substantial evidence of safety concerns specific to Swift County that would necessitate such a profound change. Instead, it imposes unnecessary restrictions on hunters who rely on the current laws to engage in a traditional outdoor pastime that is deeply woven into the cultural fabric of Minnesota.

I urge the Swift County commissioners to reconsider this ordinance in light of the broader state policies and the voices of local residents and hunters. We call upon them to engage with the community and gather insights from experts and stakeholders to ensure a well-rounded and informed decision-making process.

Please sign this petition to stand against the unwarranted limitation on firearm choices for deer season in Swift County. Together, we can preserve our rights as hunters and protect our traditions. Let’s make our voices heard and work towards fair and reasonable hunting regulations.

The proposed ordinance will be voted on at the Swift County commissioners meeting April 7, 2026 at 9 am in the Law Enforcement Center, during the commissioners meeting. If you are able to make it, let's flood the building with those opposed to the proposed ordinance and let our voices be heard!
